Finding Inner Peace: Editor H’s Real 2-Day Korean Temple Stay Experience at Suwonsa
Hello, travelers!
Have you ever felt like your soul needed a complete reset? After sharing my introductory post about temple stays, my own long-time bucket list finally woke up, leading me to pack my bags for a real-life adventure. As a local Korean, I want to share my honest Korean Temple Stay Experience to show you how a short getaway can transform your spirit. If you haven’t seen my quick explanation of what a temple stay is, feel free to check it out here before diving into my story. I hope my story sparks your curiosity and inspires your own adventure. Now, let me take you through my 48-hour journey at Suwonsa!
Why Suwonsa? The Selection Process of Editor H

My first-ever Korean Temple Stay Experience took place from Saturday, February 21 to Sunday, February 22, 2026, at a beautiful place called Suwonsa. Deciding where to spend my first Korean Temple Stay Experience was a careful process. I had a few “must-have” conditions:
First, it had to be a place to melt away work stress without being too far from Seoul—a true 1-night, 2-day stay (Not One-day).
Second, as a first-timer, I wanted an Experience-oriented program that offered plenty of activities but still gave me the freedom of “voluntary options” rather than strict enforcement.
Third, I needed a 2-person room so I could stay comfortably with my friend.
Finally, since we were driving, convenient parking was a must.
Suwonsa ticked all these boxes perfectly! Even though there was a busy event when we arrived, the parking staff managed everything smoothly. For the best experience, public transport or a taxi might be your best bet! You can find more tips on navigating the country in our transportation roadmap.
Day 1: Soul Food and the Rhythm of the Temple
My Korean Temple Stay Experience officially began with a brief orientation on temple etiquette and basic rules, putting on official temple vests. Soon, it was time for an early dinner. There’s a common prejudice that temple food—which is strictly vegan to avoid taking life—is bland and tasteless because it avoids pungent spices. But honestly, the food at Suwonsa was a revelation! Even though my friend and I aren’t usually big eaters, but we loved the even meat-free side dishes so much that we went back for once because every side dish was so flavorful.
After dinner, we learned the proper way to perform “3 bows” (Prostration) to show respect. I used to visit temples with my grandmother as a child, but learning the refined, mindful method directly from a monk felt entirely different and much more special.

The evening continued with a hands-on session making my own 108 Buddhist rosary (Buddhist prayer beads). Stringing each of the 108 beads allowed me to let go of greed and clear my cluttered mind, finding a sense of stability that is so rare in daily life—plus, I got a unique souvenir to take home!
The evening highlight was the Darma drum (Beop-go / 法鼓) experience. The Beop-go is a drum of enlightenment, symbolizing the spread of Buddha’s teachings across the world. Usually, only monks are allowed to play this sacred drum. But, Suwonsa is one of the rare places for allowing visitors to try it themselves! Being able to play the drum rather than just watching is a truly rare and exceptional experience. Check out the monk’s powerful Beop-go (Dharma drum) performance in the video below!🎥
We ended the night by reflecting on the day in the quiet comfort of our room.

Day 2: Awakening and the Gift of Wisdom
You might think waking up at the crack of dawn on a weekend sounds like a nightmare, but honestly, I woke up feeling surprisingly refreshed. Is this the “mystical power” of a temple stay?
While the 5:00 AM dawn service was a voluntary option—which we skipped to save some energy for the work week ahead. This flexibility is exactly what makes this program so charming. As a local worker who had to return to the office on Monday, I needed to balance my spiritual immersion with some physical rest.

I officially started my morning with Dawn Meditation (Chamseon). Sitting in the stillness, following my breath, and observing my thoughts was a powerful way to tidy up my mental chaos. Following the monk’s guidance helped me settle my scattered mind. It was such a meaningful practice that I’ve continued trying short meditation sessions recently to maintain my inner peace.

After another satisfying delicious vegan breakfast, we had a precious Tea time with the monk. We sipped traditional tea while the monk listened to our worries and offered wisdom on how to manage the mind so that suffering doesn’t take hold. I realized that instead of just trying to “solve” every problem quickly, mastering my own mind is the true way to overcome pain.
An Experience Worth Every Second
After finishing a short reflection essay and tidying our room, it was time to leave.
