K-ETA Exemption 2026: Does Your Country Qualify?
Hello, travelers!
If you’re planning a trip to Korea this year, one of the first things to check is whether you need a K-ETA before you fly.
The short answer: it depends on your passport.
Some travelers can skip the K-ETA entirely in 2026. Others need to apply online before boarding. Either way, this guide will tell you exactly where you stand — and what to do next.
What Is K-ETA Exemption?
K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is a pre-travel requirement for visa-free visitors to South Korea. Think of it like the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA — you apply online before your trip, pay a small fee, and get approved within 24 hours.
The K-ETA exemption means certain countries are temporarily excused from this requirement. If your country is on the list, you don’t need to apply or pay anything before you fly.
This exemption has been extended through December 31, 2026.
Is Your Country Exempt?
As of 2026, travelers from the following 22 countries qualify for the K-ETA exemption:
| Region | Eligible Countries for K-ETA exemption (22 Total) |
| Asia (5) | Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macao |
| North America (2) | United States (including Guam), Canada |
| Europe (13) | United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Austria |
| Oceania (2) | New Zealand, Australia |
Not on the list? You’re not alone — most countries aren’t. Scroll down for what you need to do.
If Your Country Is Exempt
You can enter Korea without applying for a K-ETA. No portal, no fee, no paperwork before your flight.
There’s just one thing to know: when you land at the airport, you’ll need to fill out a paper Arrival Card at immigration. It takes about two minutes.
If you’d rather skip even that, you can voluntarily apply for a K-ETA before your trip. The fee is 10,000 KRW (roughly $7–8 USD) and it’s non-refundable. Doing so means no arrival card at the airport — that’s the only real advantage.

One more thing: if you already have a valid K-ETA from a previous trip, you don’t need to do anything. It stays valid until its original two-year expiration date.
If Your Country Is Not Exempt
You’ll need to apply for a K-ETA before your flight. The process is straightforward — most people finish in under 10 minutes.
Here’s what you need to know upfront:
- Apply at least 72 hours before departure. Results usually arrive within 24 hours, but give yourself buffer time.
- Fee: 10,000 KRW (approx. $7–8 USD). Non-refundable once paid.
- Valid for 3 years from approval date — so if you’re planning to visit Korea again, you’re covered.
- You can add up to 9 traveling companions in a single application.

Before You Fly — This Applies to Everyone
Whether you’re exempt or not, these entry requirements apply to all visitors:
- Passport validity: Must be valid for the entire duration of your stay
- Return or onward ticket: You need a confirmed flight out of Korea
- Short-term stays only: This exemption covers tourism and business visits, typically up to 90 days depending on your nationality
Quick Check on the K-ETA Website
Not 100% sure about your status? The easiest way to confirm is directly on the official K-ETA portal.
Go to k-eta.go.kr, enter your passport details, and if a “K-ETA Exemption Target” pop-up appears — you’re exempt. If it doesn’t, proceed with the application.
