Anyone visiting Korea has probably already thought about a Han River picnic.
The Han River — or Hangang River (한강), as it’s officially called — is one of those rare things that makes Seoul feel like a city built for living, not just working. A river this wide, running straight through the middle of everything. And when people find out, the reaction is always the same — they want to sit by it, eat something, and just exist there for a while. I completely understand.
The Hangang isn’t one place, though. It runs for over 40 kilometers through the city, with eleven parks strung along both banks — and each one has a completely different personality. Each one belongs to a different part of Seoul.
One thing to know going in: the Han River in summer is genuinely hot. Standing in direct sun at 2 PM in July is not a pleasant experience for anyone.
So today, I’m sharing my summer version of the Hangang picnic — four evening routines, each tied to a different part of the city.
Which park you go to should depend on where you already are that day. There’s no reason to cross the city when the right one is already near you.
Here are four evening routines — one for each part of Seoul. Pick the one closest to you.

What to eat at Han River Picnic in Summer
Can I order delivery food? Do I need a Korean phone number?
Let me be honest about the delivery app situation.
Most Korean delivery apps require a local phone number to sign up. Baemin (배민) and Coupang Eats (쿠팡이츠) are not accessible for short-term visitors without a Korean number. If you’re only in Korea for a few days, ordering food by delivery app isn’t a realistic option.
The convenience store is your best bet
Every Han River park has a convenience store right at the entrance — or inside the park itself. The convenience store picnic is genuinely one of the most Seoul experiences you can have. Grab a cup of ramyeon, cook it at the free hot water machine outside, and eat it by the river. It costs around ₩1,500. There’s something about eating cheap ramyeon next to the Han River at night that no restaurant can replicate.
Buy food on the way
This is what locals actually do. Each park sits naturally next to a neighborhood with good food options nearby — pick something up before you head to the river.
Mangwon: Stop at Mangwon Market on the walk to the park — kimbap, fruit, something fried
Yeouido: The Hyundai Seoul basement food hall
Banpo: Grab something in Gangnam before heading over
Ttukseom: Seongsu has plenty of cafes and snack spots
What Should I Bring to the park?
Typical shade tent rental sets available at Han River park.
A picnic mat or light blanket
The grass at Han River parks is usually well-maintained, but you’ll want something between you and the ground.
A shade tent — or just rent one
Most Han River parks have designated zones where you can set up a shade canopy (그늘막). Vendors right at the park entrance rent them out — cash only, around ₩10,000–15,000 for 4 hours. You’ll spot them as soon as you arrive.
Bug spray
The riverside gets mosquitoes after dark, especially near the water’s edge. This is not optional.
A portable phone charger
You’ll use your phone more than you expect — for maps, navigation, and photos of the skyline.
One thin layer for later.
Even in peak summer, the river breeze at 10 PM has a real coolness to it. It catches people off guard.
A little bit of cash
Card works everywhere, but tent rental and some food vendors are cash only.
